Becoming a parent is one of life’s greatest blessings, one i am so so grateful for, but it sure comes with a steep learning curve. No parent has it all figured out  they say, and that’s true and okay. Whether you’ve just welcomed your first baby or you’re preparing for your little one’s arrival, it’s completely normal to feel excited, overwhelmed, and unsure all at once.

The truth is, there is no such thing as a perfect parent. Every baby is different, and every family finds its own rhythm. The goal isn’t perfection it’s providing your child with love, care, and a safe environment to grow.

As a parent of multiples, i have had to learn,unlearn and literally just go with the flow but in all here area few advice i wish i had ignored as well as the ones i will tell myself as a first time parent.These practical advice will help new parents confidently navigate the first year of parenthood.

The first year is usually filled with incredible milestones. Your baby will learn to smile, roll over, sit up, crawl, and perhaps even take their first steps. During this time, they rely entirely on you for comfort, nutrition, safety, and emotional security.

As a parent, you’ll also experience tremendous growth. To be honest You will very much get overwhelmed from all the sleepless nights and other activities but You’ll develop confidence, great strength and grace and then finally discover your parenting style while you build a beautiful bond with your baby.

New Parent Advice

1. Focus on Feeding Your Baby

I am sure you didn’t think this would come in first but yeah. A common new parent advise as the mom is statements like, breast milk is best just keep going. well maybe yeah but definitely not when you feel broken and bleeding or have a low milk supply listen for your body ques and just do what you can at the moment.

Whether you breastfeed, formula-feed, or combine both, the most important thing is ensuring your baby is well-fed and gaining weight appropriately.A fed  baby makes a calm baby and a happy mama that’s the best.

Feed your newborn whenever they show hunger cues.Breastfed babies Need to eat frequently to help your milk come in. Because breast milk digests quickly, they tend to eat more often and cannot be overfed. Stay hydrated if breastfeeding.

For formula fed babies, Formula takes longer to digest, so they typically eat every 2 to 4 hours. They usually consume 1 to 2 ounces per feeding in the first week, increasing to 3 to 4 ounces by the end of the first month.

Do well to Burp your baby after each feeding.Even at night when you do feel sleepy, yeap. Track wet and dirty diapers during the newborn stage for a change

Remember to speak with your pediatrician if you have concerns about feeding or weight gain. Also note that every feeding journey is unique. Don’t compare yours with someone else’s.

2. Learn Your Baby’s Sleep Patterns

Newborns don’t know the difference between day and night, so frequent waking is completely normal.

To encourage healthy sleep habits: Create a calming bedtime routine. Keep nighttime interactions quiet and calm. Lay your baby down on their back to sleep. Avoid loose blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys in the crib.

Getting your baby to fall asleep quickly at night can feel like a nightly battle but it doesn’t have to be. With the right habits, environment, and consistency, you can help your baby settle down faster and enjoy more restful nights (for both of you!). Quality sleep is important for both babies and parents.i will like to add you can’t hold a newborn too much all that holding is doing exactly what it should.

3. Attend Regular Medical Checkups

With a newborn this is  likely a common occurrence Routine appointments help ensure your baby is growing and developing well.

These visits allow healthcare providers to Monitor the growth of your baby, Administer vaccinations, Answer parenting questions, Identify developmental concerns early. Never hesitate to ask questions during appointments.

4. Prioritize Safe Sleep

Another new parent advise is to encourage safe sleep, this includes trying not to co sleep with your baby. Safe sleep greatly reduces the risk of sleep-related accidents. The right way to put baby to bed id to always place your baby on their back to sleep. Use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet. Keep the sleep space free from soft bedding. Avoid overheating your baby. Consider room-sharing without bed-sharing during infancy if recommended by your healthcare provider.

5. Build a Daily Routine

Babies thrive on consistency.

Your routine doesn’t need to be rigid, sadly it cant even be rigid because these babies sometimes will show you they have a mind of their own, like when they just refuse to sleep when they should. But truly have a consistent structure is necessary it may include: Feeding times, Nap times, Playtime, Bath time, Bedtime routine

A predictable schedule helps both parents and babies feel more settled.

6. Don’t Ignore Your Own Health

Some days you will feel strong, some days you will cry over nothing, some days you will wonder if you are doing enough.

But remember, a healthy parent is better able to care for a healthy baby. your baby does not need a perfect parent, they need a loved,present and trying parent.So do well to take care of yourself.

One of the biggest mistakes new parents make is neglecting themselves. And that shouldn’t be you. Remember to Eat nutritious meals, Drink plenty of water. Rest whenever possible, Accept help from family and friends.Take short breaks to recharge.

7. Ask for Help Without Feeling Guilty

It’s okay to accept help,you were never meant to do this alone. Make do of your community, family and friends. Some days will feel heavy but you are creating a beautiful tomorrow for your baby.

Parenting was never meant to be done alone. Its okay to reach out to  Your partner, Parents or relatives, Trusted friends, Parenting support groups, Healthcare professionals for a little help.

Accepting help isn’t a sign of weakness it’s a sign of wisdom and bravery.

8. Bond With Your Baby Every Day

New parent advise can be quite endless, you will hear people say:Don’t hold your baby too much , they will get use to it and will want to be carried always. well yeah, that should be your response.All that holding is doing exactly what its meant too. Your baby doesn’t need expensive toys to feel loved.

Simple bonding activities like Skin-to-skin contact, Talking to your baby, Singing lullabies, Reading books together, Making eye contact and Smiling and cuddling often.

These everyday moments help build trust and emotional security.

9. Prepare for Emotional Changes

Many new parents experience mood swings, anxiety, or feelings of being overwhelmed.

If these feelings become intense, last for more than a couple of weeks, or make it difficult to care for yourself or your baby, reach out to a healthcare provider. Seeking support is an important step toward feeling better.

Remember, caring for your mental well-being is part of caring for your family.

10. Trust Yourself

While learning from experienced parents can be helpful, remember that you know your baby better each day.And what you have going on is quite peculiar to your family, values  and your rules.

Survival mode is okay, you are growing a human and yourself , so getting by the day either in a chaotic or peaceful way still counts. Advice will come from every direction but do what works best for your baby and you.

Observe your baby’s cues, trust your instincts, and don’t feel pressured to parent exactly like everyone else. Always  always trust your instincts, you know your baby better than anyone else.

Some mistakes are common and completely understandable.

A great new parent advise i hold so dearly is Try to avoid Comparing your baby to others.No two babies are the same. you may have fears and worries creeping in but don’t give inn, note that your baby is perfect and will always be.

Stop Ignoring your own physical or emotional needs.Speak up and seek help when you need it. Overloading yourself with conflicting parenting advice will really overwhelm you.

Expecting perfection is just farce nobody is perfect, Skipping regular medical appointments. Forgetting to enjoy the little moments. Parenthood is a journey, not a competition.So slow your race and enjoy
