If your child eats regularly but is not gaining weight you are not imagining things or over reacting. Many parents are in this situation you cook, plan meals,make sure your child eats but still the scale does not move. However, if your baby has been diagnosed as underweight or you’re concerned, these tips can help. There are lots of reasons why children may be underweight or losing weight. When infants get the right nutrition for their needs it helps them to grow, be healthy, develop normally and heal more quickly after illness or surgery.
Extra nutrition and extra energy (kilojoules/calories) are important to help baby gain weight.

A great sustainable, weight gain is usually supported by consistent meal timing, prioritizing calorie dense meals such as healthy fat, avocado, and quick protein combinations is what you need.

Baby weight gain after starting solids comes from the major fundamentals which are Nutrient dense foods, adding healthy fats to meals,balanced meal with protein fats and carbs, good sleep and consistent routine, iron intake.

Healthy growth is a result of overall feeding pattern and not just one ingredient.

From 6 months offer small frequent energy dense meals. If your baby gets full quickly offer 5-6 mini meals, avoid filling them with water, juices and soups,. Ensure solids are thick not watery

Another factor many parent overlook is sleep:growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep. Which plays a role in growth. Growth hormones are released during sleep.Ensure your baby gets enough naps. Maintain a consistent sleep routine and generally gets enough sleep. A well-rested baby feeds better and grows better.

Finally genetic matters: Two children can eat the same meal and still grow differently because of their genetic growth patterns.

Having triplet have thought me to understand that no two kids are the same everyone is built differently physically, emotionally and mentally. in a bid to help my babies gain weight, haven done everything the results yet differ because truly no two human are the same even when born together.

The good news is that you can help them get more calories by making changes to what they eat and drink and encouraging healthy habits.

Check feeding frequency

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for babies. Feed your baby on demand, not on a strict schedule you want to Aim for 8–12 feedings per day for newborns and try to Let your baby fully empty one breast before switching. The secret is The “hind milk” (milk that comes later in a feed) is richer in fat and helps with weight gain.

Newborn-3months needs 8-12 feeds daily. 3-6 month: 7-9 feeds daily, 6-12 months 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks plus milk feeds. Too much gap between feeds can slow weight gain.

You need to also evaluate milk intake, Sometimes babies don’t gain weight because they aren’t feeding effectively. for a breastfeed baby ensure deep latch, hear swallowing, offer both sides, feed on demand not by schedule, look to see if baby seems satisfied after feeds. If breastfeeding alone isn’t enough Use expressed breast milk or infant formula, Follow your doctor’s guidance on quantity. for formula check to see if you are preparing formulae correctly,increase ounces slowly if baby seems hungry.

Ensure right formula type in case of Reflux. Finally check for regular wet and dirty diapers. If unsure, consider consulting a lactation expert if you need some help.

Introduce foods rich in calories and healthy fat

If your baby is 6 months or older, solid foods can help boost weight.Great options include:

• Mashed potatoes

• Avocado (rich in healthy fats)

• Banana

• Baby cereals mixed with milk

• Pureed beans or lentils

Add a little breast milk or formula to make meals more nutritious.

Healthy fats are essential for weight gain and brain development. Add small amounts of: Butter or margarine, Vegetable oils (like olive oil) Groundnuts (in safe, blended form for older babies)

Rule out medical causes

if weight is not improving look out for tongue tie,reflux, milk protein allergy, recurrent infection,anemia, gut issues. A pediatrician evaluation is always important and essential.

Avoid too much sugar or packaged foods, this maybe hard as we tend to lean more to the store bought cereal but to ensure our babies eat right its best to reduce and serve this meals minimally. When constipated try to treat constipation or diarrhea early.

Reduce distraction while feeding no Television, no running around, calm environment. Offer food when baby is hungry not tired. Know when to sick help, seek a pediatrician visit if baby has not gained for 1 month, if weight is falling percentile, or if baby seems weak irritable or vomiting often.

Helping your baby gain weight isn’t about rushing growth its about nurturing them with love, patience, and the right nutrition. Every small step you take matters.
